Best VPN for Students in 2026: Cheap, Safe Picks for Campus Wi-Fi

What matters

Students are an easy target for VPN marketing: fake "student discounts", lifetime deals and free apps that monetize browsing data. The useful question is simpler. What do you actually need while you are on campus, in a shared flat or travelling home for the holidays, and what does it cost over the full term rather than the first month?

We compared the three providers the site recommends most often for price-sensitive buyers. All three passed the site's WebRTC and DNS leak checks, all three include a kill switch, and all three have independently audited no-logs policies. The differences are price, renewal cost, device limits, streaming consistency and how much you want to pay for speed.

One warning before the table: the site's pricing index does not list a verified student-specific plan for any of these providers as of 31 October 2026. Treat a "student discount" as unverified until you see it at checkout. The standard two-year rate is usually the number that matters.

The three picks

#1

Surfshark

Best value for student budgets

4.4/5★★★★☆
$2.19/mo2-year plan
Visit Surfshark →

Surfshark is the obvious first stop if the monthly price is the deciding factor. At $2.19/month on the two-year plan, it is the cheapest of the three, and one subscription covers unlimited devices. That matters when you have a laptop, phone, tablet and maybe a shared TV. It retained 86% of baseline throughput, includes CleanWeb ad blocking and a kill switch, and has a Deloitte-audited no-logs policy. The catch is the renewal: $119.52 every two years after the intro term.

Pros

  • Lowest intro price
  • Unlimited devices
  • CleanWeb ad blocking
  • Deloitte-audited no logs

Cons

  • Renewal is more than double the intro rate
  • Slower than NordVPN

#2

NordVPN

Best overall if the budget stretches

4.7/5★★★★★
$3.09/mo2-year plan
Get NordVPN →

NordVPN costs about 90 cents a month more than Surfshark at the intro rate, and it is the better performer. It retained 94% of baseline throughput in our October 2026 benchmark, has 10 device slots and the most polished apps in the group. Threat Protection blocks malicious domains and ads, and the kill switch is easy to find. The renewal is the weak point: roughly $139/year after the first term, so plan to re-shop or cancel before renewal.

Pros

  • Fastest tested speeds
  • 10 devices
  • Best streaming consistency
  • PwC and Deloitte audits

Cons

  • Higher renewal
  • No free tier

#3

ProtonVPN

Best free tier and privacy

4.4/5★★★★☆
$2.99/mo2-year plan
Get ProtonVPN →

ProtonVPN is the best choice if you want to start without paying or you care most about transparency. The free plan gives you unlimited data on one device, no ads, and servers in a handful of countries. The paid plan adds 20,000+ servers, Secure Core, more devices and faster long-distance routes. It retained 88% of baseline throughput and has open-source apps and Swiss jurisdiction. Renewal at $83.88/year is the lowest of the three paid plans.

Pros

  • Real free tier
  • Open-source apps
  • Swiss jurisdiction
  • Lowest renewal of the three

Cons

  • Long-distance speeds trail NordVPN
  • Streaming less consistent

How to set it up

Before you buy, check three things: the renewal price, the refund window and the device limit. The intro price is not the price you will pay in year two. A 30-day refund window is enough to test campus Wi-Fi, your streaming services and battery life on your actual devices.

  1. Start with the shortest useful term. If you are unsure about the provider, use the 30-day refund rather than committing to a long plan.
  2. Test the campus network early. Some universities block VPN traffic or require registration. Follow the university's policy; do not use a VPN to bypass exam or network rules.
  3. Set auto-connect for untrusted networks. Campus, cafe and shared-housing Wi-Fi should connect automatically.
  4. Enable the kill switch and run a leak test. Use the leak test after setup.
  5. Put the renewal date in your calendar. Cancel or re-shop two weeks before it charges.

The details that matter

How to keep the cost down without using a bad free VPN

Use the refund window as a trial. All three providers offer 30 days. Test the apps you actually use, then decide. Do not buy a longer term than you will use. A three-year plan is only cheaper if you keep it. Check whether the unlimited-device plan is useful. Surfshark is the only one here that covers a household without buying extra seats; check the provider's terms before sharing with people outside your household. Avoid lifetime deals and unknown resellers. The site's free VPN risk guide explains why the economics of "free" usually come from somewhere else.

What about a student discount?

The site's pricing index does not list a verified student plan for NordVPN, ProtonVPN or Surfshark as of 31 October 2026. That does not prove none exists, but it does mean you should not budget around one. Compare the standard two-year rate and the renewal first; if a student offer appears at checkout, check whether it is cheaper over the full term and whether it changes the refund window.

Campus Wi-Fi is not the same as a cafe

University networks are usually managed, monitored and subject to an acceptable-use policy. A VPN can protect your traffic from other users on the network, but it does not give you permission to bypass filters, access blocked services or break exam rules. If the university blocks VPNs, use the mobile network or ask the IT desk what is allowed.

A 30-day test plan that costs nothing

  1. Week 1: install the app on the devices you actually use, connect to campus Wi-Fi and run the leak test.
  2. Week 2: test the streaming services you pay for, at the times you actually watch.
  3. Week 3: test battery life and reconnects on your phone; a VPN that drains the battery is not useful between classes.
  4. Week 4: decide before the refund window closes and put the renewal date in your calendar.

Shared housing and streaming

A shared flat often has one Wi-Fi network, several devices and a streaming account that is already logged in on the living-room TV. A VPN protects the connection, but it does not create separate streaming accounts or make a service available in a region where it is not offered. Use the provider's refund window to test the specific service and region you care about, and check the streaming platform's terms. If the goal is simply to cover every device in the flat, Surfshark's unlimited-device plan is the simplest fit; if the goal is the fastest connection for one laptop, NordVPN is the better performer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest safe VPN for a student?

Surfshark has the lowest intro price of the three at $2.19/month on the two-year plan, and it covers unlimited devices. PIA is cheaper on a three-year plan, but it requires a longer commitment and is not one of the three picks here.

Do NordVPN, ProtonVPN or Surfshark offer student discounts?

The site's pricing index does not list a verified student plan for any of them as of 31 October 2026. Check the provider's checkout directly and compare the full-term cost, not just the headline monthly rate.

Can I share a VPN with my roommates?

Surfshark allows unlimited devices on one subscription; check the terms before sharing outside your household. NordVPN and ProtonVPN allow 10 devices, which is enough for a typical student's phone, laptop and tablet.

Is a free VPN enough for campus Wi-Fi?

ProtonVPN Free is the safest free option the site recommends: unlimited data, one device, no ads and open-source apps. Most other free VPNs limit bandwidth, log data or bundle adware.

Will a VPN work on university Wi-Fi?

It depends on the network. Some universities block VPN ports or require registration. Connect after the campus login, try the provider's alternative protocol, and follow the university's acceptable-use policy.

How much does a VPN slow down student Wi-Fi?

In our October 2026 benchmark, NordVPN retained 94% of baseline throughput, ProtonVPN 88% and Surfshark 86%. On a weak dorm connection, choose a nearby server rather than a distant one.
