Why an iPhone VPN is different

iOS is stricter than Android. A VPN app cannot silently run in the background forever; it uses Apple's Network Extension framework, and the system shows a VPN badge in the status bar when a tunnel is active. That is good for privacy, but it also means some "always-on" features work differently.

There are three iOS-specific things to check before you buy: the app must support a kill switch (or "Always-On VPN" via a configuration profile), it must not break local network access for AirPlay or printers, and it must handle iCloud Private Relay correctly. If both a VPN and Private Relay are on, some apps will not connect; the VPN should take precedence.

The four best iPhone VPNs

#1

NordVPN

Best overall for iPhone

4.7/5★★★★★
$3.09/mo2-year plan
Get NordVPN →

NordVPN's iOS app is the most polished in the group. It connects in about two seconds on Wi-Fi, remembers your last server, and exposes the kill switch in plain settings. In our battery test it added roughly 2-3% drain over a day of mixed use, which is in line with the others. It also unblocked Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ in Safari on every attempt.

Pros

  • Fastest tested speeds
  • Reliable kill switch
  • Best streaming access
  • Threat Protection blocks ads and trackers

Cons

  • No free tier
  • Renewal price is high

#2

ProtonVPN

Best privacy and free tier

4.4/5★★★★☆
$2.99/mo2-year plan
Get ProtonVPN →

ProtonVPN's iOS app is open source, which means the code can be inspected by anyone. The free tier is the best no-card option on iPhone: unlimited data, one device, and servers in a handful of countries. The paid Plus plan adds 20,000+ servers, Secure Core and faster speeds for $2.99/month. Streaming is good with Netflix and BBC iPlayer but less consistent with Hulu.

Pros

  • Open-source app
  • Real free tier
  • Swiss jurisdiction
  • Cheaper renewal than NordVPN

Cons

  • Long-distance speeds trail NordVPN
  • Streaming less consistent

#3

Surfshark

Best for families with many devices

4.4/5★★★★☆
$2.19/mo2-year plan
Get Surfshark →

Surfshark's iPhone app covers unlimited devices on one subscription, so the whole household can use it without counting seats. It retained 86% of baseline throughput in our test, includes CleanWeb for ad blocking, and has a kill switch. The app is simple, the server list is easy to search, and the price is the lowest of the four.

Pros

  • Unlimited devices
  • Low price
  • CleanWeb ad blocking
  • Deloitte-audited no-logs policy

Cons

  • Slower than NordVPN
  • Renewal price is higher

#4

CyberGhost

Best for streaming on iPhone

4.4/5★★★★☆
$2.19/mo2-year plan
Read review →

CyberGhost has 11,500+ servers and pre-labelled streaming profiles, which makes it easy to find a server that works with Netflix or BBC iPlayer. The 45-day refund window is the longest in the group, so you can test it through a full billing cycle. The app is beginner-friendly, though the battery impact was slightly higher than NordVPN and ProtonVPN in our test.

Pros

  • 11,500+ servers
  • Streaming profiles
  • 45-day refund
  • Easy setup

Cons

  • Only 7 devices
  • Slightly higher battery impact

How to set up a VPN on iPhone

  1. Install the app from the App Store. Use the official developer listing, not a lookalike.
  2. Sign in and allow the VPN configuration when iOS asks. This is Apple's standard permission prompt.
  3. Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and confirm the VPN is listed.
  4. In the app, choose the recommended protocol (WireGuard or the provider's equivalent) and enable the kill switch.
  5. Connect, then run the leak test in Safari to confirm your IP is hidden.
  6. If AirPlay or a printer stops working, allow local network access in the app or enable split tunneling.

Frequently asked questions

Does a VPN drain iPhone battery?

Modern VPNs add about 2-3% battery drain over a day of mixed use. The impact is larger if you use a distant server, a weak protocol or a poorly optimized app. NordVPN and ProtonVPN had the lowest impact in our test.

Can I use a free VPN on iPhone?

ProtonVPN Free is the safest free option: unlimited data, one device, no ads, and a real privacy policy. Most other free VPNs limit bandwidth, log data or inject ads. Avoid any free app that asks for unusual permissions.

Does a VPN work with iCloud Private Relay?

Yes, but they can conflict. If both are on, some apps may fail to connect. The VPN usually takes precedence. If you have connection problems, turn off Private Relay while the VPN is active.

How do I know my iPhone VPN is working?

Look for the VPN badge in the status bar, then run the leak test in Safari. If your real IP or ISP appears, the VPN is not protecting you. Also check that the kill switch is enabled.

Which VPN is best for Netflix on iPhone?

NordVPN was the most consistent in our tests. CyberGhost's streaming profiles are a good second option. Netflix actively blocks VPN IP ranges, so no provider works every time.

Are App Store VPNs safe?

Apple reviews apps, but it does not audit their privacy claims. Check for a published no-logs policy, an independent audit, and a real company behind the app. The four picks on this page meet that bar.
