What matters on Windows

Windows has the widest app support and the most configuration options, which is both good and bad. A VPN that works on your phone may still leak on Windows if it does not handle IPv6, DNS or the Windows Filtering Platform correctly.

Check four things: the app uses a modern protocol (WireGuard or the provider's WireGuard-based protocol), the kill switch actually blocks traffic when the tunnel drops, split tunneling works per app, and the DNS resolver is set by the VPN, not left to your ISP.

How to set up a VPN on Windows

  1. Download the installer from the provider's official site, not a third-party download portal.
  2. Install and sign in. Allow the TAP/WireGuard adapter when Windows asks.
  3. Choose WireGuard or the provider's recommended protocol. Avoid PPTP and L2TP.
  4. Enable the kill switch and DNS leak protection in settings.
  5. Connect, then run the leak test in Chrome or Edge.
  6. If a banking or work app blocks the VPN, add it to split tunneling.

Frequently asked questions

Does a VPN slow down Windows?

Yes, but the best providers limit the loss. NordVPN retained 94% of baseline throughput in our test, ProtonVPN 88%, Surfshark 86% and PIA 81%. The loss is usually invisible for browsing and streaming.

Which VPN protocol is fastest on Windows?

WireGuard and WireGuard-based protocols such as NordLynx are the fastest in our tests. OpenVPN is slower but more mature. IKEv2 is a good fallback on unstable networks.

How do I check for DNS leaks on Windows?

Run our leak test, then check your DNS resolver with a second tool. If your ISP's DNS server appears while the VPN is connected, the VPN is not handling DNS correctly.

Can I use a free VPN on Windows?

ProtonVPN Free is the safest option: unlimited data, one device, no ads and open-source apps. Most other free VPNs limit bandwidth, log data or bundle adware.

Does a VPN work on Windows 10?

Yes. All four providers support Windows 10 and 11. The apps are the same; only the installer differs.

Can I use a VPN on a work laptop?

Only if your employer allows it. Corporate devices may block VPN adapters or require a split tunnel. Check your IT policy before installing anything. For team-level deployment, see our business VPN guide.
